Ingredients

  • Dehulled little millet – 1 cup
  • Water – 5 cups
  • Tomato – 2–3 (chopped)
  • Onion – 1 (chopped)
  • Green chilies – 1–2
  • Ginger – 1-inch piece (chopped)
  • Carrot – 1 (chopped)
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Coriander leaves – for garnish
  • Oil – 2 tablespoons
  • Salt – to taste

For Tempering:

  • Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Chana dal (Bengal gram dal) – 1 teaspoon
  • Urad dal (black gram dal) – 1 teaspoon

Spices:

  • Turmeric powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Red chili powder – 1 teaspoon

Preparation Method

Step 1: Prepare Millet

  1. Soak dehulled little millet for 30 minutes.
  2. Wash thoroughly.
  3. Cook with water in a 1:5 ratio for about 15 minutes.
  4. Keep aside.

Step 2: Tempering

  1. Heat oil in a pan.
  2. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add chana dal and urad dal.
  4. Fry until golden.

Step 3: Cook Vegetables

  1. Add chopped onion, ginger, and green chilies.
  2. Sauté for a few minutes.
  3. Add carrot and curry leaves.
  4. Cook for 5–10 minutes.

Step 4: Add Tomato & Spices

  1. Add chopped tomatoes.
  2. Add turmeric powder and red chili powder.
  3. Cook until tomatoes become soft and mushy.

Step 5: Combine

  1. Add cooked millet and salt.
  2. Mix well.
  3. Cook for 2–3 minutes on low flame.

Step 6: Serve

  1. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  2. Serve hot with coconut chutney or pickle.
