Dates Burfi is a wholesome and delicious Indian sweet made without refined sugar. This millet-based dates burfi combines the natural sweetness of dates with nutrient-rich millet flakes and dry fruits like almonds, cashews, and pistachios.

Ingredients

  • Dates (seedless) – 1 cup

  • Finger millet (ragi) flakes – ½ cup

  • Sorghum (jowar) flakes – ½ cup

  • Cashew nuts – ¼ cup

  • Pistachios – 2 tablespoons

  • Poppy seeds – 1 tablespoon

  • Coconut powder – 2 tablespoons

  • Cardamom powder – ½ teaspoon

  • Nutmeg powder – a pinch

  • Ghee – 2 tablespoons

Preparation Method

Step 1: Roasting

  1. Dry roast finger millet flakes, sorghum flakes, almonds, cashew nuts, pistachios, and poppy seeds separately on low flame until aromatic.


Step 2: Grinding

  1. Grind finger millet flakes, sorghum flakes, almonds, cashew nuts, and pistachios separately into a coarse powder.

  2. Combine all the ground ingredients with coconut powder and cardamom powder.


Step 3: Prepare Dates Mixture

  1. Deseed the dates (if not already seedless) and keep them ready.

  2. Heat ghee in a pan.

  3. Add nutmeg powder and dates.

  4. Cook on low flame, mashing and stirring continuously.


Step 4: Mixing

  1. Add the prepared millet and dry fruit powder mixture to the dates.

  2. Mix thoroughly and cook for about 10–15 minutes until everything combines well into a thick mixture.


Step 5: Shaping

  1. Transfer the mixture onto a greased surface or plate.

  2. Shape into a cylindrical roll or flatten evenly like burfi.

  3. Garnish with shredded pistachios and poppy seeds.


Step 6: Setting

  1. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  2. Cut into pieces and serve chilled.
