Kodo Millet Upma Recipe – Healthy Millet Breakfast

Kodo Millet Upma is a wholesome and easy-to-prepare dish made using kodo millet instead of semolina. This recipe provides higher fiber content and better digestion while maintaining the comforting taste of traditional upma.

With the addition of vegetables and mild spices, this dish is ideal for breakfast, light dinners, or quick meals. It is filling, nutritious, and suitable for all age groups.


Ingredients

  • Kodo millet rice – 1 cup
  • Chopped onions – ½ cup
  • Green chillies – 2
  • Carrot – 1 (chopped)
  • Grated ginger – 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Black gram dal – ½ tsp
  • Bengal gram dal – ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Water – 4 cups
  • Oil – as required
  • Salt – to taste

Preparation Method

  1. Wash kodo millet two to three times, drain the water completely, and keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.
  3. Add black gram dal, Bengal gram dal, curry leaves, and green chillies. Sauté until the dals turn golden brown.
  4. Add chopped onions, ginger, and turmeric. Sauté until the onions turn soft and light golden.
  5. Add chopped carrots and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Add the washed kodo millet and sauté for 1 minute until well combined.
  7. Add 4 cups of water and salt. Bring to a boil.
  8. Close the lid and cook on medium flame for about 5 whistles.
  9. Once the pressure subsides, open the lid and mix gently.
  10. Serve hot.

  • Serve with coconut chutney or tomato chutney
  • Can be paired with sambar for a complete meal
  • Suitable for breakfast or light dinner
