Sago Khichdi, also known as Sabudana Khichdi, is a popular Indian dish often prepared during fasting days or as a light meal. This millet-based version replaces regular rice with little millet, making it more nutritious and fiber-rich.

Ingredients

  • Sago (sabudana) – 1 cup
  • Dehulled little millet – ½ cup
  • Water – as required

  • Bengal gram (chana dal) – 1 tablespoon
  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Green chili paste – 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander leaves – 2 tablespoons (chopped)
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 2 tablespoons

Preparation Method

Step 1: Prepare Sago

  1. Place sago in a perforated bowl and wash under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. Soak in enough water to cover for a few hours.
  3. Drain excess water and keep aside.

Step 2: Cook Millet

  1. Wash little millet thoroughly.
  2. Cook with water in a 1:2 ratio for about 15 minutes until soft.

Step 3: Combine Sago & Millet

  1. Add soaked sago to the cooked millet.
  2. Cook together for about 10 minutes on low flame.
  3. Keep aside.

Step 4: Tempering

  1. Heat oil in a pan.
  2. Add peanuts, chana dal, and cumin seeds.
  3. Fry until aromatic.
  4. Add green chili paste, salt, and coriander leaves.
  5. Sauté for a few minutes.

Step 5: Final Mixing

  1. Add the cooked millet and sago mixture.
  2. Add roasted peanut powder.
  3. Mix well and cook on low flame for a few minutes.
  4. Turn off the flame.

Step 6: Serve

  1. Serve hot.
